In the book, I Was in Prison: United Methodist Perspectives on Prison Ministry, James M. Shopshire, Mark C. Hicks, and Richard Stoglin sum up where prison ministry was in 2008 and where we still are today.
“United Methodists have a rich history of involvement in prison ministry and criminal justice work. Yet today, precisely at a time when incarceration is reaching unprecedented levels in the United States, prison ministry in the United Methodist Church is fragmented and badly in need of a fresh vision.”
It is time for a new vision. However, for a new vision to arise, the voices of those working in the trenches need to be heard.
Please share with us what your team is doing! What does your ministry do in prison? Is your primary activity a worship service? What does that look like? Do the prisoners have a leadership role? If not a worship service, what are your activities?
Please share what the activities of your ministry look like. Let us hear your team’s voice.
